Netflix unveils controversial conspiracy theory 50 years later

Infamous mystery man DB Cooper is at the center of a new netflix documentary about the lasting legacy of his supposed disappearance that made headlines in 1971.

“DB Cooper: where are you? debuts on the streamer on July 13. The official login line reads: “In 1971, a skyjacker parachutes from a plane with a bag of stolen cash – and walks away. Decades later, his identity remains an irresistible mystery.

Cooper demanded $200,000 and four parachutes after he hijacked a flight from Portland, OR, in the middle of the night. He then jumped out of the plane and was never seen (or caught) again. Cooper has become something of a folkloric anti-hero, with commentators thinking his “tough guy” persona has made him “some kind of god”.

Dubbed an “anti-hero individualistic thinker”, Cooper has been at the center of many conspiracy theories, with the FBI claiming that “citizen detectives” may have discovered what really happened to Cooper. The FBI case was officially closed in 2016.

“This case forces you to question your own sanity,” a narrator said. Another added: “I know who he is in my heart.”

Cooper has been in the spotlight for decades, with HBO Max recently releasing the 2020 documentary ‘The Mystery of DB Cooper’, directed by John Dower. Cooper was also central to a “Mad Men” fan theory that Don Draper (Jon Hamm) was actually Cooper, aided no less by the fact that he was an advertising executive for the fictional company Sterling Cooper in the 1960s in New York. And Where Are You?!” premieres just five days before the 15th anniversary of the Emmy-winning AMC drama “Mad Men” (its first episode aired July 19, 2007).

The Netflix doc follows viral “Tinder Swindler” and “Bad Vegan” on the streamer. “White Hot: The Rise and Fall of Abercrombie & Fitch” also created waves revisiting the racial bias and #MeToo abuse behind the beloved 2000s brand. Additionally, “The Marilyn Monroe Mystery: The Unreleased Tapes” also debuted in April 2022, just months before the fictional portrayal by Marilyn Monroe”Blondlanding on the streamer on September 23 with Ana de Armas playing the “Some Like It Hot” icon.

Now 1970s icon DB Cooper is also getting the Netflix treatment. Check out the teaser below.

“DB Cooper: where are you? premieres Wednesday, July 13 on Netflix.
