TURIN, Italy–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Reply today announced that it has implemented a Quantum-inspired algorithm, which can be used on both Quantum and traditional computers, to Enel, one of the world’s leading operators in the power generation and renewable energy sector. the innovative solution allows Enel to quickly identify the optimal distribution of maintenance activities for the operational units distributed in the areas where it operates.

For Enel, which claims a presence in more than 30 countries around the world, a network of more than 2.2 million kilometers and 74 million end users, it is essential to coordinate teams and the allocation and planning the objectives of the operational units dispersed in the different territories to guarantee the best level of service to its customers. Hence the need for the most effective operational planning possible.

The solution developed by Reply is based on the QUBO (Unconstrained Binary Quadratic Optimization) mathematical model and can be realized efficiently by quantum hardware, known as Quantum Processing Units or QPUas well as by classical hardware, known as Graphics processing units or GPUs.

Extracting the maximum potential from GPUs has been possible thanks to the MegaQUBO accelerator, a software solution developed by Data Reply to accelerate the implementation of Quantum-Inspired Optimization Projects. MegaQUBO is a solution certified by Amazon Web Services for use on the AWS Cloud, through the “FTR – Foundational Technical Review” process, which ensures that the software meets AWS architectural best practices.

In addition to identifying the optimal distribution of activities, the algorithm created for Enel is also able to calculate the optimal travel routes to reach work destinations, minimizing travel times and distances and maximizing the time available for actual maintenance work. This leads to a significant increased productivity and a substantial reduced functioning costs, as well as the corresponding costs environmental impact.

“Quantum computing makes it possible to solve challenges that were considered insurmountable just a few years ago,” comments Filippo Rizzante, Technical Response Manager. “As we have been able to successfully demonstrate based on our experience with Enel, the use of quantum algorithms to solve optimization problems allows us to obtain significant advantages, not only in the quality of the results, but also in the reduction of processing times. At Reply, we are therefore closely exploring different areas in which we can exploit the potential of quantum computing to obtain information from extremely large and constantly updated databases.

“The need to implement optimization strategies over increasingly large territories has increased the complexity of the problem all the more, to the point that a new and innovative approach was necessary”, explains Fabio Veronese, head of the Infrastructure & Networks digital hub at ENEL. “The Quantum Inspired approach implemented with Reply has delivered meaningful, real-world results on the ground, and is applicable to both known issues and new business contexts.”
