Dynamo Theory Breakfast Links – May 2, 2022
It’s that time of the week again and I’m bringing your breakfast links on a shiny platter. You could be reading anywhere on your Monday morning (insert routine), but you are here with us, and we thank you for that. There’s a lot to dig into from this weekend, so let’s get to it.
Mom said there would be days like this and overall it was an extremely tough weekend for the Houston teams and the fans.
Houston Dynamo lost another close to an upstate opponent and this time it was here at home to Austin FC losing 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. It’s Dynamo’s first home defeat this season. ‘Se-brace’ Ferreira scored the possible goal of the season by capitalizing on an error by Austin goalie Brad Stuver and flying out of midfield. Both teams held their breath as Stuver tried to come back, but having gone so far he arrived just in time to look up and see the ball scream out of the sky and into the net with itself. The momentum was too strong, he carried it all the way to the back of the net where he suffered a laceration in his knee in the process and had to be taken out of play via a stretcher.
Dynamo couldn’t resist Austin’s onslaught as Daniel Pereira and Sebastian Driussi both managed to score taking all 3 points on the road. Dynamo have stalled a bit now as they have now gone down 2 times in a row. It won’t always be pretty, but we’re trying to extend the benefit of the doubt knowing that this process of evaluating and getting the most out of this squad is currently easier said than done. This is especially true with the limited Dynamo due to its depth issues. They will go over to the tape to try and come up with a game plan for next week when they travel to face DC United May 7.
Houston will need to figure that out quickly though, as the upcoming schedule isn’t doing them any favors. They are away to DC May 7, home to San Antonio FC May 11 in the Open Cup, home May 14 to Nashville FC, home May 18 to Seattle, away to the Galaxy on 22 and away against RSL on the 28th. So as you can see next month is really going to challenge manager Paulo Nagamura and it should be interesting to see who he incorporates from the ever-improving Dynamo 2 squad to help alleviate some of the mounting pressure of lack of depth.
The Houston Dash dropped its NWSL season opener at PNC Stadium this weekend against the San Diego Wave, but they managed to get their 4and biggest crowd in franchise history (myself included). The Dash looked like the better team throughout the first half as they looked to keep Alex Morgan and the rest of the wave out of the net. Possession of this was split down the middle at 50-50, with Dash having more chances and shots overall, but it was Wave who were able to grab the late goal in the 86th minute through substitute Jodi Taylor to take it all. 3 points for their side. The Dash had plenty of positives to build on in this one and they will regroup ahead of an away game against the Kansas City current at Field of Legends next weekend on Sunday, May 8.and.
Houston Dynamo 2 had an incredibly impressive run recently, but that came to an end on Sunday night as they fell to the Tacoma Challenge 4-1. Papa N’Doye was able to score in the 80and minute but it was the only highlight of the evening for Dynamo 2. Coach Kenny Bundy will prepare the boys for next week’s game at AVEVA Stadium against Colorado Rapids 2 on Sunday, May 8and at 20 hours. The way this Dynamo 2 team has been playing lately, we’re confident they’ll return to their league threatening form next time around.
Nashville SC opened GEODIS Park on Sunday afternoon in front of 30,019 fans. The NSC earned a late penalty from Randall Leal to earn a point against the Philadelphia Union to open the largest football-dedicated stadium in the United States. Nashville brought out all the bells and whistles for their new home and co-owner and actress Reese Witherspoon was even among the crowd.
After a drought of 388 minutes, the Columbus Crew showed up in massive fashion as they saw off DC United 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. Ola Kamara had one of the best opportunities for DC on the afternoon after he managed to round the keeper for his shot to hit the right post before being recovered. The crew avoided a potential disaster by not being excluded in this one, which would have been a club record 5and game in a row.
Even after knocking a man down in the 63rd minute, the Colorado Rapids were able to face the Portland Woods this Saturday 2-0. Colorado saw goals from Diego Rubio in all 30and minute, 33 minutes before his red card, and Mark-Anthony Kaye putting him to bed late in the 90and plus 5.
FC Dallas conceded the first this weekend in the 22n/a minutes like SportingKansas City were able to take a penalty where Johnny Russell buried him on the spot. FC Dallas would come back with 2 goals in less than 10 minutes (Alan Velasco in the 36andand Jesus Ferreira in the 42n/a) before losing Brandon Servania on a red card in the 67and minute. That’s all SKC needed and 10 minutes later they would level this one in the 77and when Daniel Salloi scored a home with his left. This is where this game would stay at one 2-2 draw.
At the end of this week in MLS, Austin FC is in second place in the Western Conference, behind LAFC, with 20 points. Their possession-based style of play was remarkably successful early on and Sebastian Driussi is now tied with Jesus Jimenez for most goals of the season with 7. The Houston Dynamo sit in 7and and FC Dallas are in 4and place in the Western Conference standings.
Around the world
As leagues around the world continue to strive towards their inevitable ends, some have landed silverware while others are still fighting to the wire.
real Madrid picked up their 35and La Liga title in Club history with their 4-0 win over Espanyol at the weekend. They have truly had a magical season with the emergence of young players like 21-year-old Vinicius Junior and a truly memorable season from Karim Benzema who scored 26 goals, 11 more than the next closest player in the entire league. I feel like if you talk about Real Madrid you have to talk about Carlo Ancelotti and the job he has done. With this title, he becomes the first coach to win the top 5 European leagues.
Both liverpool and Manchester City won their games this weekend, leaving City on 83 and Liverpool on 82 with just 4 games left. The EPL will look to the last few weeks to see who will prevail as the two European giants inflict damage on anyone who stands in their way.
Chelsea has started to flatline as the season draws to a close and they may have to fight harder than they expected to keep their UCL hopes alive for next season like Arsenal and Tottenham catch the stride and are all within 5 points of Chelsea’s 66 points. Arsenal have 63 and Tottenham have 61, so Chelsea will be looking to hold the line in their remaining 4 games.
At Dynamo Theory, we join the masses of the sports world as we mourn the passing of an icon. A man who needed no introduction, Mino Raiola, died Saturday at the age of 54. The impact he had will forever resonate throughout the game. Some hated him and some loved him, but he was respected by everyone, and the game will never be the same without this monumental football agent.
