Description of the subject

The subject consists of fundamental theoretical computer science. This covers research in all areas of algorithms and complexity theory such as circuit complexity, combinatorial optimization, communication complexity, distributed algorithms, graph algorithms, quantum algorithms and complexity proofs.

Functions

The work includes research and supervision of doctoral students in the field. The assistant professor must establish and direct a research program, including the creation of a research group. In addition, the assistant professor is expected to attract research funds and establish industrial and academic collaboration nationally and internationally. The position also includes the development and teaching of undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate courses in the discipline.

The assistant professor will have the opportunity to develop his independence as a researcher and to obtain accreditation allowing him to occupy other teaching positions with higher eligibility conditions (see chapter 4, section 12 a of the ordinance on higher education). After application, the Assistant Professor may apply for promotion to the rank of Associate Professor in accordance with Chapter 4, Section 12 c of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Eligibility

A person who has obtained a doctorate or equivalent research expertise is qualified to be appointed as an assistant professor. Applicants who have met these qualifications within five years of the expiration of the application period should be given priority. Other candidates may also be considered if there are extraordinary reasons to do so. Extraordinary reasons refer to illness, parental leave or similar circumstances.

Reasons for evaluation

The evaluation criteria for appointment as an assistant professor at KTH are set out in section 1.3 of the KTH appointment procedure and apply according to the defined job profile.

Of the utmost importance is that the applicant has

  • research expertise demonstrated by research publications, attendance at conferences, participation in research cooperations and also other undertakings in the scientific community such as, for example, assignments as a reviewer or expert.
  • possibility of accessing a post of higher education. This includes the potential for independent development as a researcher and teacher in the field in question as well as the ability to establish, examine and develop the field of research in question.

Of second importance is that the applicant has

  • an interest and understanding of pedagogical development in the area in question
  • an interest and understanding of leadership in an academic environment, third-tier activities, and awareness of diversity and equal treatment issues with a particular focus on gender equality.
  • postdoctoral stays in a research environment other than the university where the candidate defended his doctoral thesis. Experience of research and development work within industry or other organizations is considered to correspond to a traditional postdoctoral visit to another university.

When evaluating an application for promotion to Associate Professor, the candidate’s ability to initiate and independently conduct research of high scientific quality, published in international journals and conference proceedings, as well as the Applicant’s ability to attract funding for research activities will be assessed. The candidate’s ability to independently establish new research collaborations and directions is of utmost importance. The candidate’s demonstrated competence in teaching and supervision is also of utmost importance. The ability to teach in Swedish is a merit that is given great importance when applying for promotion.

Time limitation: the appointment is for an indefinite period, but not more than six years, and may be extended if, due to the teacher’s absence due to sick leave, parental leave or other special patterns, more time is needed to achieve the goals of the appointment. However, the total duration of the mandate cannot exceed eight years. The appointment is part of the Tenure Track system at KTH and the Assistant Professor can seek promotion to Full Associate Professor.
